Many travelers to Barbados are excited to find duty free goods right at their fingertips. But do you know what you are permitted to bring back home? Don’t be disappointed and misunderstand how duty free goods will be treated upon your return. It is important to be a good guest as you are in Barbados and to handle duty free goods properly.

If you are from the U.S.A. or Canada you have the ability to bring duty free goods home with you – but certain limits exist. Knowing these limits in advance can help you plan your souvenir and gift shopping while on Barbados. Or it can help you plan to pay an additional fee if you are over the limit for duty free items.

Some items simply aren’t allowed to leave Barbados, just as they aren’t permitted to leave other countries. These include fruit and vegetables (also their seeds or unprocessed plant products). Illegal drugs and pornography are also prohibited. If you wish to import certain plants, seeds or cuttings you may be required to obtain an import permit and a photosanitary certificate. These can be obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture.

Duty Free Allowances for the U.S.A.

If your stay in Barbados is longer than 48 hours, you may bring back free of duty items up to $400 U.S.A. dollars (the value is based on the retail value of items in country where they were purchased). If your duty free items exceed $400 there is a duty of 10% on the next $1,000 U.S.A.. After that amount another duty will apply.

A litre of duty free liquor is permitted for people over the age of 21.

You are permitted to mail gifts home to friends and family at the value of $50 each. They may not receive more than one gift a day. These do not need to be declared.

Duty Free Allowances for Canada

If your stay in Barbados is 48 hours or longer, you can bring up to $400 Canadian in duty free items home. If your stay is 7 days or longer you may bring up to $750 Canadian in duty.

Each person of legal drinking age may bring back 1.4 litres of alcoholic beverages or 1.5 litres of wine or 24 12 oz cans/bottles of beer

No duty or GST is charged on purchases under $300. GST is charged on the entire total purchases. Duty can vary on alcoholic beverages.

Canadians in Barbados can mail gifts that value $40 Canadian to friends and family and they will be free of duty, this excludes alcoholic beverages.
